Are you curious as to the issue and impacts of invasive species in the Central Kootenay region? Do you want to minimize the impacts of invasive species on the ecosystems, communities, and economy of the Central Kootenay region? If you do, then there are exciting opportunities for you to join the team at CKISS! We are looking for one go – getter to be our Education Program Assistant and two people who love physical work in an outdoor setting to fill the role of Invasive Species Technicians. 

Invasive Species Technician

  • 2 Full time positions from May 1, 2017 – August 24, 2017
    The CKISS team using mechanical methods to remove Fragrant Water lily.
  • Wage is $17/hour, 40 hours per week
  • Application deadline is March 3, 2017 by 4:00 pm PST
  • Position is based out of Rossland with travel throughout the Central and West Kootenays

Job Description:

  • Manual treatment of invasive plants in priority locations (80% of activities)
  • Assist with ground truthing and verify invasive species reports
  • Assist with inventory of invasive species with a tablet and associated GIS programs
  • Collect and release biological control agents
  • Provide technical support to CKISS Operations Program Coordinator (create maps, manage data, place signage)
  • Broadcast (hand) seeding of disturbed soils
  • Provide landowners with information on invasive plant identification and management
  • Participate in invasive species management research projects, as required
  • Complete and submit regular safety meetings, inspections, and field reports

Mandatory Qualifications include:

  • Must be between the ages of 15-30 years of age at the start of employment
  • Have been registered as a full-time student in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year
  • Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations
  • Successful completion of security screening, which includes a criminal record check
  • Valid Level 1 OFA
  • Valid B.C. driver’s license
  • Clean Driving record (3 year abstract and claims history required)

Desirable Attributes:

  • At least one year of post-secondary education or equivalent diploma in one or more of the following fields: forestry; sustainable resource management; fish, wildlife and recreation; environmental science; biology; ecology; conservation agricultural science; integrated pest management; GIS
  • Able to identify a variety native and non-native plant species found in the Kootenay region
  • Proficient with GPS and mapping technologies and software
  • Comfortable working in remote locations
  • Backcountry driving experience
  • Positive attitude and get along well with others
  • Enjoy working outdoors in variable field conditions

Working Conditions:

The Invasive Species Technician will be working in the office and in the field. Approximately 20% of the job is office based and 80% is field based. You will be working extended and variable hours during the summer months. You will be working 10 hours, 4 days a week, Monday-Thursday with occasional weekends. Travel will be required in this position; a company vehicle will be supplied for all travel related to CKISS.  Job is based out of Rossland.

Physical Requirements:

The Invasive Species Technician will be required to complete field work including brushing, walking for long periods of time, weed pulling and/or biocontrol collections. You will be outside working in a variety of weather. You must be physically fit and will be expected to conduct all aspects of this job.

Invasive Species Education Assistant

  • 1 Full time position from May 1, 2017 to August 21, 2017
  • Wage is $17/per hour, 40 hours per week
  • Application deadline is March 3, 2017 by 4:00 pm PST
  • Position is based out of Rossland with travel throughout the Central and West Kootenays

Job Description:

  • Host educational display booth and deliver education programs to the public at events, such as community festivals, boat launches, farmers markets, garden centers.
  • Assist with school and youth educational programs
  • Complete resource distribution to local businesses as required
  • Take and file photos of invasive species for future use by CKISS
  • Assist with website updates, newsletters, press releases and social media posts
  • Assist the Aquatic Invasive Species Program Coordinator with aquatics programs as required
  • Assist Operations Program Coordinator and Executive Director in the field as required (inventory and surveys)
  • Public speaking and engagement
  • Assist with facilitation of workshops and events
  • Assist with administrative tasks, updating documents, excel, etc.
  • Follow all CKISS policies and safety requirements, and ensure the safety of yourself and your co-workers at all times

  • Experience working with children, and/or public speaking
  • Self-motivated and comfortable working unsupervised
  • Experience with or knowledge of invasive species
  • Able to work in variable environmental conditions
  • Positive attitude and gets along well with others

Working Conditions:

The Education Program Assistant will be working in the office and in the field. Approximately 50% of the job is office based and 50% is field based. You will be working extended and variable hours during the summer months, including weekends. You will be working 8 hours, 5 days a week, including weekends and evenings. Travel will be required in this position; a company vehicle will be supplied for all travel related to CKISS.  Job is based out of Rossland.

Physical Requirements:

The Education Program Assistant will be required to lift boxes and booth equipment, and must be capable of standing for long periods of time. All activities require you to be physically fit and to conduct all physical aspects of the job.
