June 9, 2023 – Slocan Valley Community Weed Pull

Do you want to volunteer with a local environmental group in order to make a positive difference? Well here is your chance, CKISS is teaming up with the Slocan Lake Stewardship Society (SLSS) to run a Community Weed Pull event in the Slocan Valley. The weed pull will take place at the Hunter Siding wetland just north of Hills BC. This site is part of  SLSS’ Bonanza Biodiversity Corridor Project which contributes significantly to the functioning of the Slocan Lake Watershed.

We need your help cutting invasive bull thistle at Hunter Siding!  Thistle outcompetes native plant species and ultimately disrupts an area’s ecosystem complexity. These disturbances result in reduced habitat suitability and support for wildlife.

Community Weed Pull

A Community Weed Pull event is when a group of volunteers uses hand tools to remove an invasive plant infestation in their community. Volunteers will receive hands-on learning experiences on the impacts invasive plants can have on ecosystems and economies. In addition, you will learn about the targeted plant’s ecology, proper removal and disposal techniques.  These events are a fun way to develop environmental ambassadors.

Please bring your own:

  • Gloves – we have spares if required
  • Sturdy footwear
  • Long sleeves/pants
  • Water and snacks
  • Tools will be provided. Feel free to bring your own clean clippers to cut the thistle or shovel to dig out other invasive plants.
