Zebra Mussels Found in Marimo Moss Balls…again! A Call to Action

Recently, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) detected invasive zebra mussels in Marimo moss balls, a popular aquarium decoration. This discovery, made in Renton, Washington, highlights the ongoing threat of invasive species to our ecosystems. Zebra mussels are notorious for their ability to cause severe environmental and economic damage if they establish in new habitats.

WDFW’s rapid response underscores the importance of vigilance. Aquarium owners who purchased Marimo moss balls within the last year are urged to inspect and decontaminate their tanks to prevent further spread. This incident follows a similar one in 2021, which led to significant policy changes across North America.

To report suspicious findings in your aquarium call the RAPP line 1-877-952-RAPP (7277).
