Recapping Three Years of Riparian Restoration in the Kootenay Region

As we complete the Communities Protect Freshwater Together: Riparian Restoration in the Kootenay Region Eco Action Project, we’re excited to highlight the remarkable progress made over the past three years. This initiative focused on restoring critical freshwater and riparian habitats at three sites in the Central Kootenay region: Jubilee Wetland, Hunter Siding Wetland, and Harrop Wetland. Through spring weed pulls and fall plantings, local stewardship groups, students and volunteers made a lasting impact, from removing invasive species to replanting native vegetation to restore these essential ecosystems.

Community-Driven Restoration Efforts

Invasive plant removal and native planting, led by students and volunteers, have been key to our project. For example, at Jubilee Wetland, students from Rossland Summit School helped eliminate invasive Canada thistle and creeping buttercup. One particularly special native plant, the Oregon Checker Mallow, is making a comeback in the restored areas, a positive sign for this threatened species thanks to our dedicated restoration efforts. Hunter Siding Wetland also saw success with invasive species removal thanks to the Slocan Lake Stewardship Society, BC Wildlife Federation and community volunteers, while at Harrop Wetland, students from Redfish Elementary and J.L. Crowe bolstered habitat for at-risk species like the western toad and painted turtle.

The Importance of Wetlands

Wetlands are crucial to environmental health. They store carbon, filter pollutants, mitigate flooding, and support diverse wildlife. By preserving wetlands, we safeguard ecosystem health and biodiversity in the Kootenay region.

Thank You, Volunteers!

The success of this project was made possible by our dedicated community. A heartfelt thank-you goes to our volunteers, students, partners, and supporters—your collaboration and commitment have made a real impact. Together, we’re helping protect freshwater quality in the Kootenays for generations to come.
