May 27 & 28 , 2016 – CBEEN Spring Environmental Celebration

Our friends at CBEEN are offering two workshops in Revelstoke this spring in May. Here is your chance to learn how to create behaviour changes & ideas on how to teach about invasive species.

Community-Based Social Marketing Workshop

When: Friday May 27, 2016Nelson Seedy Sat

Time: 1:00pm-5:00pm

Where: Revelstoke Community Centre

Please note this is not a social media workshop. Community-based social marketing emphasizes direct contact among community members and the removal of structural barriers. Community-based social marketing also uses a set of “tools” which have been identified as being particularly effective in fostering such change. While each of these tools on its own is capable of promoting healthy and/or sustainable behaviour under the right conditions, the tools are most effective when used together (www.toolsofchange.com).

This workshop will discuss these principles and tools, and offer participants the opportunity to work together to see how CBSM can work at a practical level in their communities.

Teaching About Invasive Species Workshop

When: Saturday May 28, 2016IMG_4939

Time: 10:00 am – 3:00 pm

Where: Revelstoke Community Centre

Participants will have the opportunity to be part of a pilot ‘Teach the Teachers on Invasives’ workshop where Sue Staniforth will empower teachers with the knowledge, tools and resources to teach about invasive species both inside and outside of their classrooms.

The Columbia Shuswap Invasive Species Society will then take participants out on an afternoon field excursion where they will have the opportunity to walk down to the river to learn more about invasives and native species. Participants will be able to access a site classrooms can use for walks and learn to identify plants such as Himalayan Balsam/Policemen’s Helmet, Knotweed, Reed Canary Grass, and many more.
