Are you curious as to the issue and impacts of invasive species in the Central Kootenay region? Do you want to minimize the impacts of invasive species on the ecosystems, communities, and economy of the Central Kootenay region? If you do, then there are exciting opportunities for you to join the team at CKISS! We are looking for two team players with strong communication skills who love physical work in an outdoor setting to fill the role of Invasive Species Technicians. 

Invasive Species Technician

  • 2 Full time positions from May 6, 2019 – August 30, 2019.
  • Wage is $20/hour,40 hours per week.
  • Application deadline is March 13, 2019 by 4:00 pm PST
  • Position is based in Nelson with travel throughout the Central and West Kootenays

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist with inventory of invasive species and biological control agents
  • Manual treatment of invasive plants in priority locations, sign installation and removal
  • Host educational display booth, deliver education programs and distribute resources to the public at events, such as community festivals, school field trips, boat launches, farmers markets, garden centers, etc.
  • Assist with website updates, newsletters, press releases and social media posts
  • Provide landowners with information on invasive plant identification and management

Mandatory Qualifications include:

  • Must be between the ages of 15-30 years of age at the start of employment
  • Priority will be given to hiring at least one current college or university student, who will be returning to school in September 2019.
  • Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations
  • Successful completion of security screening, which includes a criminal record check
  • Valid Level 1 Occupational First Aid
  • Valid B.C. driver’s license
  • Clean Driving record (3 year abstract and claims history required)

Desirable Attributes:

  • At least one year of post-secondary education or equivalent diploma in one or more of the following fields: forestry; sustainable resource management; fish, wildlife and recreation; environmental science; biology; ecology; conservation agricultural science; integrated pest management; GIS
  • Able to identify a variety of native and non-native plant species found in the Kootenay region
  • Proficient with GPS and mapping technologies and software
  • Experienced working and driving in remote locations
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience editing WordPress websites
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office software, in particular PowerPoint, Word and Excel
  • Experience working with the public,  children, and/or public speaking
  • Self-motivated and comfortable working unsupervised
  • Positive attitude and get along well with others
  • Enjoy working outdoors in variable field conditions

Working Conditions:

The Invasive Species Technician will be working in the office and in the field. Approximately 20% of the job is office based and 80% is field based. You will be working extended and variable hours during the field season.  You will usually be working 10 hours/day, 4 days a week, with some weekend work required. Travel will be required in this position; a company vehicle will be supplied for all travel related to CKISS.  Job is based out of Nelson.

Physical Requirements:

The Invasive Species Technician will be required to complete field work including brushing, walking for long periods of time, weed pulling and/or biocontrol collections. You will be outside working in a variety of weather. You must be physically fit and will be expected to conduct all aspects of this job.
