The Senior Invasive Species Technician will provide senior level, year-round support to the terrestrial operations program, and will support other program areas when required.
Duties and Working Conditions
Under the direction of the Field Program Manager, this position will plan and conduct field work, train and supervise seasonal staff, and assist with related office tasks as required. The Senior Field Technician will coordinate and deliver on-the-ground invasive species management including: surveys and removal of invasive plants in priority locations; sign installation and removal; biological control agent surveys and collection; treatment monitoring; and sample collection for invasive mussel monitoring. The position will also be required to assist with work planning, data management, mapping and project reporting. You will be outside working in a variety of weather, and must be physically fit and willing to work long hours outdoors in variable field conditions.
Eligibility Requirements
- Diploma or Bachelor of Science in a relevant field such as Biology, Ecology, Range Science, Rec Fish and Wildlife, Agriculture, or Natural Resource Management, with at least two seasons of related experience
- Must have graduated from a recognized university or college within the past two years
- Depending on funding, preference may be given to applicants who are 30 years of age or less at the time of job commencement and have not previously participated in a federal youth employment program
- Legally entitled to work in Canada
- Valid Level 1 OFA, or willing to obtain
- Valid driver’s license, with a Clean Driving record (3 year abstract and claims history required)
Other Qualifications and Skills
- Positive, energetic team player who is self-motivated and comfortable working unsupervised
- Proven experience leading and/or supervising staff
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Organized and detail oriented
- Strong skills using Microsoft Office software, particularly Excel and Word
- Experience in invasive and native plant identification
- Experience collecting and managing spatial data, using ArcGIS and/or related software
- Experience working and driving in remote locations
- Valid BC Pesticide Applicators Certificate, or willing to obtain
- Successful completion of a criminal record check after hiring
Term:
Permanent, year-round
Wage: Starting salary based on $22.42/hour
Hours: Full time, 32 hours per week
Start Date: May 4, 2020 or earlier
Location: Based in Nelson; work sites throughout the Central Kootenay region
